The Department of Homeland Security is the Cabinet department charged with safeguarding the United States against terrorism and other threats. It oversees border security and immigration, aviation and transportation security, cybersecurity and critical-infrastructure protection, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and disaster response through FEMA. Its work reaches travelers, immigrants, businesses, and communities across the country.
Created by Congress under the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (Pub. L. No. 107-296, 116 Stat. 2135 (codified at 6 U.S.C. § 101 et seq.)), it acts within the authority that statute grants. Its actions are subject to judicial review and to congressional oversight and funding.
