What it does
NASA is the federal government's civilian space agency. It conducts human and robotic spaceflight, aeronautics research, and Earth and space science, and develops related technology. It is led by a single Administrator who is appointed by the President with Senate confirmation and serves at the President's pleasure; NASA has no regulatory authority over private parties.

L. 85-568, 72 Stat. 426 (signed July 29, 1958); codified at 51 U.S.C. ch. 201 (esp. 51 U.S.C. 20111)), it acts within the authority that statute grants. Its actions are subject to judicial review and to congressional oversight and funding.
