The VA runs the nation's largest integrated health care system for veterans and pays out disability compensation, pensions, education (GI Bill), and home-loan benefits earned through military service. It also operates national veterans cemeteries. Its work covers veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, caregivers, and survivors.
Created by Congress under the Department of Veterans Affairs Act (Pub. L. 100-527; 38 U.S.C. Sec. 301), it acts within the authority that statute grants. Its actions are subject to judicial review and to congressional oversight and funding.
