States, cities & tribes
Indian country
The legal term for lands where tribal and federal jurisdiction generally displaces state authority: reservations, dependent communities, and allotments.
In full
Defined at 18 U.S.C. 1151, the term determines which government prosecutes a crime and which laws apply. McGirt v. Oklahoma (2020) held that a large reservation had never been disestablished, changing criminal jurisdiction across much of eastern Oklahoma and illustrating how much turns on the boundary.
