select committee
A committee created for a specific purpose or period, usually to investigate something, rather than to hold permanent jurisdiction over a subject.

A chamber creates a select or special committee by resolution when a subject does not fit an existing committee or needs concentrated attention: an investigation, an intelligence oversight function, a study of a discrete problem. Some are temporary and dissolve when they report; a few, like the intelligence committees, have become permanent in all but name.
