A legally enforceable command to appear and testify, or to produce documents. Courts, grand juries, and congressional committees can all issue one.

A subpoena ad testificandum compels testimony; a subpoena duces tecum compels documents. Ignoring one exposes the recipient to contempt. Recipients may move to quash a subpoena as overbroad, unduly burdensome, or privileged, and disputes between Congress and the executive over subpoenas have become one of the central separation-of-powers conflicts of the modern era.
