Supporters argue ID requirements protect against impersonation and build confidence; opponents note that impersonation is exceedingly rare and that ID requirements fall hardest on voters who are poor, elderly, disabled, or without a car. Most strict states provide a free ID and a provisional-ballot path with an affidavit or later verification.
