The President's personal representative to a foreign government or international organization, nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

Ambassadors lead an embassy and every U.S. agency operating in that country except forces under a military commander. Roughly two-thirds are career Foreign Service officers and the rest political appointees. Consulates, headed by consuls general, handle visas and assistance to citizens in cities outside the capital.
