The period from when a chamber convenes until it adjourns, which can span many calendar days if it only recesses in between.

A chamber that recesses rather than adjourns is still in the same legislative day when it returns, so a single Senate legislative day has occasionally stretched for weeks. The distinction is not trivia: some rules, including those governing the morning hour and certain motions, run off legislative days rather than calendar ones.
