Making laws
majority leader
The floor leader of the chamber's larger party. In the Senate this is the most powerful office in the body; in the House it ranks below the Speaker.
In full
The majority leader decides what the chamber votes on and when. In the Senate, where there is no Speaker, the majority leader controls the floor through the right of first recognition and by filing cloture, which makes the office the single biggest gatekeeper in Congress. In the House the Speaker holds that power, and the majority leader manages the floor schedule under them.
