school board
The elected or appointed body governing a public school district: hires the superintendent, adopts the budget and curriculum policy, and sets the tax levy in many states.

School districts are usually independent units of government with their own taxing authority and their own elections, often held off cycle with very low turnout. Boards operate under state education law and state standards, so their discretion is real but bounded. Meetings are public and subject to open meetings law.
