Speaker of the House
The presiding officer of the House, elected by the whole chamber, and second in the line of presidential succession. In practice the leader of the majority party.

The Speaker controls what reaches the floor, refers bills to committee, appoints members to select committees, and shapes the Rules Committee that governs debate. The Constitution does not require the Speaker to be a member of the House, though every one has been. Removal is by a privileged motion to vacate the chair, whose availability has itself become a recurring fight.
