Tenure protection exists so a decisionmaker can rule against whoever appointed them. Article III gives federal judges service during good behavior and a salary that cannot be cut, leaving impeachment as the only removal route. State judges are mostly elected or reappointed on fixed terms, which is the central design difference between the two systems.
