temporary restraining order
A very short emergency order stopping something immediately, sometimes granted without hearing the other side, and lasting only until a fuller hearing.

A TRO is the fastest relief a court gives, available when waiting would cause irreparable harm. Federal TROs granted without notice expire in 14 days unless extended, and the court sets a prompt hearing on a preliminary injunction. Because the record is thin, a TRO says little about the merits.
