Title VII
The employment discrimination provision of the Civil Rights Act, barring discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
In full
Title VII covers hiring, firing, pay, promotion, and harassment, and requires employers to accommodate religious practice absent substantial burden. Bostock v. Clayton County (2020) held that discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity is discrimination because of sex. Claims generally must go to the EEOC before a lawsuit.
