The chief federal prosecutor for one of the 94 judicial districts, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

U.S. Attorneys bring federal criminal charges and defend the United States in civil suits within their district. They report to the Attorney General but exercise substantial charging discretion locally. They also decide whether to prosecute criminal contempt of Congress referrals, which is why that enforcement route is weak against the sitting administration.
