Jury selection: questioning prospective jurors to find bias. Each side may strike some for cause and a limited number without giving a reason.

Challenges for cause are unlimited but must be justified. Peremptory strikes need no reason, but Batson v. Kentucky (1986) forbids using them to exclude jurors because of race, later extended to sex. Enforcing that limit is difficult, since a plausible neutral reason is usually available, and several states have moved to restrict peremptories further.
