Each clause does distinct work. Confrontation bars most out-of-court statements offered against a defendant unless the witness testifies. Compulsory process lets the defense subpoena its own witnesses. The counsel right, made real for the poor by Gideon v. Wainwright, is the one that determines whether the others function in practice.
